Sugar Maple at Marian College

A big Sugar Maple that sits near the Allison Mansion at Marian College is this issue’s Cool Tree.

The tree is 47 and one-quarter inches in diameter and is approximately 125-150 years old.

It was likely planted by the progressive architect Jens Jensen who designed several acres of ground on the northern end of the Marian College Campus known as Riverdale.

Known for his work on parks and estates in the Chicago area during the early 1900’s, Jensen helped to create a uniquely Midwestern style of city parks and private gardens known today as the Prairie Style of landscape architect.
Marian College is actively working to improve native biodiversity within the EcoLab through environmental restoration.
